Bringing Neetu and Rishi together was challenge: Arindam

Producer Arindam Chaudhuri says he had approached Juhi Chawla to play Neetu Singh's character because he was not sure that the actress will agree to make a comeback with 'Do Dooni Char' after a gap of 24 years.

Neetu, who said goodbye to acting after her marriage to Rishi, plays a middle class Punjabi housewife opposite Rishi in the movie, which releases this week.

"Rishiji was not sure whether Neetuji will agree. We approached Juhi Chawla but the actress did not want to play mother to an 18-year-old. We finally decided to go back to Neetuji and she loved the script," says Chaudhuri.

Chaudhuri, who has produced Amitabh Bachchan starrer 'The Last Lear' and national award winning film 'Faltu', says bringing the couple to his film was a huge achievement.

"Neetu has always played very glamorous and elegant roles but for the first time she will be seen playing a middleclass woman. In fact, all the clothes that she is wearing in the film have come from Sarojini Nagar. We have given her a complete makeover," says the producer.

Chaudhuri, who is Honorary Dean for the IIPM Centre for Economic Research and Advanced Studies, says his father's life as a teacher inspired him to make the film.

"We wanted to make a film on a teacher's life. The story was developed by director Habib Faisal and me. Our parents were teachers and we have seen the limitations that they face. The film is about a family's journey from a two-wheeler to a car," he says.

"It also talks about how consumerism works in a family. It is about consumerism versus family values. Somehow parents have disappeared from our cinema. The family has no role in our films today."

Asked about his next project, Chaudhuri says he is planning to move to big budget cinema with his next venture, which will also star some known faces.

"I entered Bollywood as an outsider but I have a better understanding of the market now. My next venture will have a bigger budget and some known stars but I won't compromise on the story," said Chaudhuri, who is currently working on two books.

'Jhootha Hi Sahi' release pushed by a week

Mumbai, Oct 6, 2010(PTI)

Actor John Abhraham's fans will have to wait a little longer to catch his latest film'Jhootha Hi Sahi as the film, originally slated to release on October 15, has been delayed by a week.

Oscar-winner A R Rahman, who has given the music in the Abbas Tyrewala directed film, still requires some work on the background score of the movie, which has resulted in the delay.

"Abbas took a completely creative decision when he postpone the release date by a week. Abbas feels that what A R Rahman brings to a project is very valuable and therefore, he did not want to hamper A R Rahman's creative process by binding him with time limits,"a source close to the director said.

Producer Madhu Mantena confirmed the delay, saying,"It's true that we've decided to release Jhootha Hi Sahi on the 22nd of October instead of the 15th of October. It's only good, as we will utilise this extra time in promoting our film."

Official explanation notwithstanding, the delay in release could also be to avoid a clash with Priyadarshan's'Aakrosh', which stars heavyweights like Ajay Devgn and Bipasha Basu.

'Jhootha Hi Sahi', starring Tyrewala's wife Pakhi in the lead opposite Abraham, will now have to battle with Ram Gopal Varma's'Rakta Charitra and Mallika Sherawat starrer'Hisss'.

The year has not been lucky for Abraham. His film'Aashayein'released after a delay of nearly three years to bad box office collection.

'Jhootha.'too was in limbo for sometime and his'Hook Ya Crook'has reportedly been shelved.

The release date of other Bollywood movies are also expected to be affected after Ranbir Kapoor-Priyanka Chopra starrer'Anjaana Anjaani'got pushed back because of Ayodhya verdict, forcing Priyadarshan to delay'Aakrosh'as well.

Bhansali not confident of making a comedy film

Mumbai (12 Nov ,2010),(pti). Filmmaker Sanjay Leela Bhansali, who has mastered the art of presenting intense and dark stories on celluloid, says he is not sure whether he will ever try his hands on comedy.

"I think it is difficult to make a full-fledged comedy film. I don't know will I ever make it. I never plan about my movies.I cannot say what will be my next,"Bhansali, who is gearing up for the release of 'Guzaarish' told media.

The 47-year-old director has dealt with dark subjects in his films like 'Khamoshi', which was about a deaf and mute couple; 'Devdas' was about a dejected lover; 'Black', showed the trials and tribulations of a blind, deaf and mute girl.

All these movies went on to become big hits except for 'Saawariya' which failed to ignite the box-office. Now Bhansali is wooing audiences with 'Guzaarish' that deals with another serious issue-euthanasia.

"Euthanasia is a subject that has never been handled in Indian cinema before. It is a very important issue. With big stars we made an entertaining film that still talks about the sensitive issue. We are not propagating it.We are not taking sides,"the director said.

The movie stars Hrithik Roshan, which sees him essaying the role of a magician who becomes a paraplegic when a magic trick goes wrong. Aishwarya Rai plays the role of a nurse.

With his new offering, Bhansali explores a paraplegic's life.

"I like taking up subjects that are closer to life.To which audience can relate but in an entertaining way. I don't want to bore my audiences,"he said.

The film, releasing on November 19, also marks the debut of Bhansali as a music composer. "Since my childhood I have been fascinated with music. I love listening Marathi and Gujarati music,"he said.

Guzaarish releases in Pakistan ahead of India

Islamabad (20 Nov ,2010),(pti). For the first time ever, Pakistani fans of Bollywood scored over their counterparts across the border when Sanjay Leela Bhansali's much-awaited"Guzaarish"was screened in Pakistan two days ahead of its Indian release.

"Guzaarish", which stars Hrithik Roshan and Aishwarya Rai, was released in Pakistani cinema halls on November 17. It was released two days later in India.

Bhansali's movie became the first Bollywood film to be released in Pakistan before India. The movie was set for release in both countries on November 19 but Pakistani cinema owners began screening it earlier to coincide with the Eid-ul-Azha festival celebrated on November 17.

The film was initially set for release on November 12 in both countries but was delayed by a week. Exhibitors in Pakistan, who had already obtained prints of the film, decided to release it on Eid.

An exhibitor, who did not want to be named, told The Express Tribune newspaper that, according to the law, it wasn't right to release an Indian film in Pakistan before its release in India. However, as cinema halls didn't have any new films to screen during Eid, theatre owners decided to screen"Guzaarish", he said.

The film met the expectations of cinema owners and distributors and remained the highest grosser in almost all halls in Lahore during the three-day Eid festivities.

An official of Cine Star cinema said the response was overwhelming even though the hall did not have the facility of advance bookings."Toy Story 3","Golmaal 3", and"Action Replay"were also released during Eid but could not match the"phenomenal response to"Guzaarish", distributors and hall owners said.

Sharmila pays tribute to the genius of Satyajit Ray

Singapore, Oct 2, 2010(PTI)

Sharmila Tagore, who inaugurated a retrospective on Satyajit Ray's cinema here, said she is forever indebted to the great director for introducing her to the wonderful world of cinema.

The actress was just 14 when she debuted as an actor with Ray's'Apur Sansar', the last part of Ray's'Apu Trilogy.

Speaking at the screening of Ray's 1955 classic'Pather Panchali', the inaugural film of the 24-day long retrospective on Ray's cinema, Tagore said,"He introduced me to the wonderful world of cinema and it has been a privilege since then."

"Fifty years after he made his first film and some 20 years after he has expired, Ray remains an integral part of the film world,"said Tagore about India's most famous filmmaker.

More than 200 attended the screening of'Pather Panchali'at the National Museum of Singapore, which was organised by the High Commission of India, Directorate of Film Festival and the Ministry of Information&Broadcasting.

Tagore also acted in the filmmaker's'Devi'before moving to the commercial cinema. She made a return to Ray's cinema with films like'Nayak','Aranyer Din Ratri'and'Seemabaddha'.

"Ray's legacy was his characters in the film, which featured the struggle of ordinary person. The director, who was honoured with a Lifetime Achievement Oscar and Bharat Ratna, had a dream of showing his beloved Bengal to the rest of the world, said Tagore.
