AP Horticulture
Horticulture was bifurcated from Agriculture Department in 1982. Area under Horticulture crops during 1982 was recorded as 3.7 Lakh Hac. in 2001 13.78 Lakh Hac was recorded with an annual production of 9.5 M.Ts, in 2002 1.5 Million Hac with an annual production of 10.00 M.Ts, in 2003-04 Area was recorded as 1.6 Million Hac with an annual production of 11.8 M.Ts, in 2004-05 the area is about 15.79 Lakh Hectares with production of 128 Lakh M.Ts and in 2005-06 the area is about 16.49 Lakh Hectares with production of 144.1 Lakh M.Ts. Andhra Pradesh is the leader in Production of Citrus, Chillies, Turmeric and Oil Palm and also major producer of Cocoa, Cashew, Guava, Coriander, Banana, Ginger And Coconut. The main objective of the department is to extend Technical services to farmers and to guide farmers is implementation of new Technologies, introduction of new crops etc.

Department of Horticulture Nagaland
The Department of Horticulture was bifurcated from the Department of Agriculture in 1992. It is headed by a Director assisted by two Joint Directors and one Sr. Fruit Technological Officer in the rank of Joint Director, Four Deputy Directors, four Junior Officers including one Junior Accounts Officer and a host of Ministerial staff headed by a Registrar.

Garden and Forest
Garden and Forest: A Journal of Horticulture, Landscape Art, and Forestry was the first American journal devoted to horticulture, botany, landscape design and preservation, national and urban park development, scientific forestry, and the conservation of forest resources. The journal was established by Charles Sprague Sargent (1841-1927), the founding director of the Arnold Arboretum of Harvard University. Though the journal was published independently, Sargent considered the weekly magazine the organ of the Arboretum.

All aspects of horticulture are prevalent in India,i.e.the production of fruits, vegetables, potato, tubers, ornamentals, medicinal and aromatic plants, spices, plantation crops and mushroom: both in fruits and vegetables. India is the second largest producing country in the world. Temperate fruits are grown in the north himalayan region while subtropical and tropical fruits, vegetables, ornamentals, mushroom, spices are cultivated in the rest of India. Spices and plantation crops are found in peninsular region. Arid zone crops are grown in western India.

The creditability of horticulture has been well established in improving productivity of land, generating employment's, improving economic conditions of the farmers and entrepreneurs, enhancing exports and above all providing nutritional security to the people. The sector, which includes fruits vegetables, root and tuber crops, mushroom, floriculture, medical and aromatic plants, cashewnut, plantation crops including coconut and oil palm has established its creditability. Focussed attention to horticulture was given only during Eighth Plan although tune was set in VII Plan after achieving self-sufficiency in food grains. Contribution of Horticulture to GDP of agriculture is estimated to be more than 24.5 from less than 8 percent of cultivated area.
